Dinner & the Breakfast Club

Last night was pretty awesome. First? Dinner with the ladies. I love girls' nights! We hit Fireside Pies in Grapevine - the crust is absolutely amazing. Yuuuuummy! And it was just good seeing everybody and chatting and relaxing.

After I got home, Wes and I headed out to the Denton Movie Tavern to see their midnight movie of the week - The Breakfast Club. That is without question the best 80s movie ever (followed by My Best Friend is a Vampire - yes, I know you haven't seen that one... no one has, it seems). It was just plain fun getting to see it in the theater. <3

Lonesome Dove

My papau loaned me this one when I was home visiting my family last since I saw his copy of the videos on a shelf and mentioned that I still never had watched it. He insisted that I needed to read the book before I watched and then took me out to the workshop where he keeps his favorite westerns (mostly Zane Gray) and gave me a copy of the book as well as loaning me the tapes when we got back inside. So watching will be the next step.

I think what I was most surprised by was the fact that it just plain wasn't quite what I expected. I was expecting a straight adventure story, I suppose, something that reminded me of the Young Guns movies (my primary indoctrination into westerns as a genre). Instead it was, yes, an adventure story but with a lot more emotional scope and depth than I'd expected. I was sad when I finished it and realized I was all out of story. So even if you aren't generally a western fan (or like me don't even know enough to know whether you are or not), I'd say to give this one a try. It starts out a bit slow, but once things pick up, there's always something going on.

Why aren't you watching this already?

Bragging

We went to Dallas Comic*Con... um... okay, it was a few weeks ago. I'm slow. But I'm now sharing with you the awesomeness. The con itself was small, though pretty heavily attended. But what got me hot and bothered were the guests.

First up we went over to Barry Bostwick's table. I'm sure everyone knows (or you'd best find out quick, buddies!), but he was Brad in the Rocky Horror Picture Show as well as doing a bazillion other things throughout the years (including one of the Lexx movies - rock). There was only one other guy there. How's that happen?! Dude in front of us did put us to shame, though, as he had his Rocky script in hand and ready for signing. We bought a lovely, debauched picture of Barry as Brad, however, and told him that we'd met at Rocky. He seemed to think that was cute, and we told him about the local cast, Los Bastardos (the one Wes was on when we met), though he declined the idea of going to the show after a moment's thought. Probably safer for him that way. lol

Then I shyly insisted that we shoulder our way through to Rene Auberjonois (for the ignorant, Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the original Father Mulcahy from M*A*S*H as well as the master vampire in My Best Friend is a Vampire... which is a rockin' 80s flick). I still have no idea how we were the only ones at his table! Anyway, he was quiet and I was shy, and Wes was totally shocked that he'd been in M*A*S*H, but I told him that I loved his work, he was very gracious (and quite handsome in person, I might add), and all in all... awesome.

Plus I got a stack of Hellraiser comics (I had no idea these existed... score!), re-bought the Nightcrawler limited series I used to have, and some other excellently dorky finds.

WANT.

Nothing major, I just have a total desire for sushi. Like NOW. Why is it not in front of me waiting to be eaten? But I don't think we can afford sushi this weekend, so... fail to that!

WoW Break

So starting September 19, I'll be doing something I haven't done in years - taking a break from World of Warcraft. It's been a long time coming, but I just need to take a couple months away and focus my energy elsewhere, plus save a few bucks a month. We're considering giving Aion a try and are giving the beta a go. I'm not madly in love, but... we'll see. It definitely has potential. In the meantime, I'm super excited to be getting Sims 3 sometime this week thanks to some Amazon gift cards. Woot woot!

I also got a new computer, and next week we'll be doing the same for Wes. Nothing super crazy fancy - just a new eMachine. It's still a major upgrade for me, and it's nice having a faster computer. The darn thing is ugly as sin, though, I admit - bright white. Yikes!

Crazy Cake

The flash really doesn't do it justice, but here's my weird cake. It's yellow cake with neon blue and green mixed in to make it green. The icing looks pink here, but it's actually a lovely, marble-y shade of purple. Totally from the box except for the color, so nothing fancy, but it's my little "yay long weekend" celebration :)

And it's DELICIOUS. lol
