Expect Changes...

Construction worker, originally uploaded by alexey05.
Expect a lot of changes soon. Well, okay, maybe not a lot, but a few. This blog will be looking new - definitely new colors and new header, new name, possibly a new layout. The upside? All the content you (presumably) love will stay the same. Yay!

Hottie of the Week: Matt Smith

I won't lie: I might have used some of these pictures before. I truly don't care. Matt's hot and I want to post pictures of him. If you don't like it, we probably aren't very good friends to start with ;)

The Crying (Football) Game

Somehow this whole mini-scandal missed me when it first broke, so my introduction was discussion on The Daily Show. This morning, it was cleared up while listening to the radio that Manti Te'o is apparently a football player. He met a chick online who was mormon, of the same ethnicity, big into talking about God and not having phone sex...

Apparently said chick was not a chick. It was some dude named Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. Ha. Funny gag. But for some reason because he's a football player, this warrants an interview with Katie Couric. Let me say this again: BECAUSE A FOOTBALL PLAYER WAS DUMB, HE GOT A HUGE INTERVIEW WITH KATIE COURIC.

I'm confused. Sports people, is this a sports thing? Is he just awesome or something? Or is it a mormon thing? Are people freaking because a mormon guy dated a fake guy? Help me out here!

Movie Review: Struck by Lightning

The greatest compliment I can give Struck by Lightning is that I wasn't thinking about Glee at all as I watched it. Obviously like most people, I fell in love with Chris as Kurt on Glee (he was my favorite character by about 10 minutes into the pilot). While I always want to see actors I love succeed in their endeavors, I'm sure I'm not alone in having butterflies in my stomach when they move away from what I fell in love with them in. It can be scary because you know that you're sitting down to watch the moment when you might fall out of love with the actor to a degree and realize you're just in love with a character.

Thankfully, that is not the case here. Chris is a fluid, adept actor. Apart from one brief "Kurt" look in a daydream sequence, you won't be thinking about sequins and show tunes. At all. I'll take a moment here to confess that as a former struggling small town school newspaper editor and writing fanatic myself, I saw a lot of me in Carson. A lot, right down to the absentee dad (who thank god never put me in the position Carson's dad put him in - I lack the grace to have handled it so well). Thankfully I had a mom who always read my work, supported me, and smoothed over a lot of those rough times.

This movie is a downer in a lot of ways. You start the film off knowing you're about to spend an hour and a half falling for a character who is already dead. This isn't a spoiler: the movie opens with him dying. But that doesn't matter, really, because the point is the experience. The point is seeing how easy it is to give up on your dreams and how hard and painful it can be to fight for them - and how much it's worth it. Every single performance is honestly wonderful. Chris Colfer is brilliant (again, I was relieved and pleased and giddy about that), Allison Janney is heartbreaking and messed up and amazing as Carson's mother, Polly Bergen will make you want to call and spend time with grandparents you don't even have, and Rebel Wilson is a total scene stealer (despite not having an American accent totally under her control just yet).

Basically, if you don't mind some sniffles and tears along with your revelations and moments of zen and humor, this movie is entirely worth your time. Hell, to support Chris and company, I vote that you click the link at the top of this puppy and rent it whether that's your cup of tea or not. I walked away from SBL inspired, shaken, and incredibly excited to see what Chris has in store next.

Pin-creation: Cheddar Bay Biscuits

I've been making an effort of late to not only pin things on Pinterest but MAKE them afterwards, so I've decided to share my humble efforts with you. These are faux Red Lobster-style biscuits. The recipe comes from this site and is as follows:

  • 1 1/2 Cups Bisquick or other biscuit mix
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (I used half mild and half sharp since it was what I had; I think all sharp would probably taste better)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3/4 tsp garlic salt (I confess here and now that I had none so I mixed garlic & salt)

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray cooking sheet with non-stick spray.
  2. Combine biscuit mix, cheese and milk in a bowl and mix well (with a spoon works just fine). The dough will be sticky.
  3. Use a tablespoon to drop lumps of dough onto the cookie sheet about an inch and a half apart. Bake for ten minutes.
  4. Melt butter and garlic salt (a quick spin in the microwave does the trick).
  5. When the time goes off, remove the biscuits, brush them with the butter mixture, and bake for five more minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. Serve immediately.

They were delicious. The recipe makes a dozen. My 17-month-old son had one and a half, and my husband and I ate the rest, so obviously I can't recommend these when you're dieting, but they're awesome. Definitely on par with the real Red Lobster biscuits.

The changes I want to make next time: Get real garlic salt. These were a touch too salty using garlic AND salt, and I think that could be fixed. My ratio was just off. I also need to get coarse shredded cheese instead of fine since I think that will give a texture closer to the "real thing."
